Choosing an HDMI over CAT6 Extender

An HDMI over CAT6 extender sends 4K HDMI, and often USB, audio, and control, over a single Category cable well beyond the roughly 15 foot limit of a passive HDMI cable. A transmitter sits at the source and a receiver at the display, using HDBaseT to reach up to 40, 50, 70, or 100 meters depending on the model.

Key Digital extender sets cover the common distances: the KD-X444SP reaches 50m and the KD-X444LP reaches 70m, while HDBaseT PoH wall-plate transmitters such as the KD-X4x1WUTx add input switching and USB 2.0 for BYOD rooms. Receivers like the KD-X100MRx (100m) and KD-X40MRx (40m) pair with UCC transmitters, and the KD-XUSB2 extends USB 2.0 over CAT for cameras and touch displays.

Choose by distance, by whether you need switching or USB at the wall plate, and by whether the receiver should be powered over the cable (PoH). Full-buffer technology keeps the 18Gbps signal clean over long runs. An authorized Key Digital dealer can match the transmitter and receiver set to your cable route.

Frequently asked questions

How far can an HDMI over CAT6 extender reach?

Key Digital HDBaseT extenders reach up to 40, 50, 70, or 100 meters over a single Category cable depending on the model, far beyond the roughly 15 foot limit of a passive HDMI cable.

What is HDBaseT and PoH?

HDBaseT is the technology that carries 4K HDMI, audio, control, and sometimes USB over a single Category cable. PoH (Power over HDBaseT) powers the remote receiver over that same cable, so it needs no local power supply.

Can an extender also switch inputs or carry USB?

Yes. Wall-plate transmitters such as the KD-X4x1WUTx combine input switching with USB 2.0 extension over HDBaseT, which is ideal for BYOD conference rooms. The KD-XUSB2 extends USB 2.0 on its own for cameras and touch displays.

Do I need a matching transmitter and receiver?

Yes. Extenders work as a set, with a transmitter at the source and a receiver at the display. Key Digital sells matched kits and also individual transmitters and receivers for UCC systems.

What is full buffer technology?

Full buffer technology reconditions the HDMI signal so the full 18Gbps 4K signal stays clean over long Category cable runs, which improves reliability compared with basic extenders.
